The healthiest food options at the grocery store can be found around the perimeter of the store. This is where you can find your fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, and meats and seafood. When you start heading to the inner part of the grocery store, this is where you can get into trouble. You are bound to find a great deal of processed foods and snack foods that will sabotage any diet plan. So start with the perimeter and fill your basket with these ingredients first. Not only are these healthier options, but they are fresh and delicious. Then fill in the blanks with the other options to ensure a healthy trip that leaves you on your diet plan.
Go with a List and a Purpose
If you go into the grocery store without a plan, you might as well kiss your diet plan goodbye. You must think through your food choices well in advance or else you are going to get into trouble. Wandering around the store or aimlessly heading down this aisle or that will ensure you end up with a basket full of less than healthy options. Think through meals that you will prepare in advance, create a healthy ingredient list, and stick to the plan. This is a great way to ensure that you don’t deviate and that you stick to your healthy even in the site of great temptation.
Read Labels When in Doubt
The reality is that you want to fill your basket with fresh and healthy ingredients, and therefore you shouldn’t have to read too many labels to begin with. However the truth is that you are bound to buy some foods that are canned or packaged. Therefore you need to become an expert at reading labels if you want to stick to a diet plan in any way, shape, or form. Pay special attention to serving sizes, fat, calories, protein, carbohydrates, and even sodium. These can be good for you in some cases such as protein or fiber, or they can present diet sabotage with fat or sodium. Stay away from temptations and know what a label really represents.
